History Notes
Irwin County was split to
establish Worth County which explains why so many of the children show both
counties.
Benjamin Willis
VI was born 1810 in
Telfair County, Georgia, and died May 4, 1882 in Irwin County, Georgia.
Benjamin Willis
enlisted as a Private in the Confederate Army on July
6, 1864 and was discharged that same year due to "Old Age" He was 54 years
old.
Benjamin
and Sallie
had four sons who served in the Confederate Army:
Daniel Willis

Appomatox, Va. Fought at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and
Petersburg (short siege)

Company B, 10th Georgia Battalion.
William G. Willis

Notes from 1860 Census:
Benjamin Willis
owned real estate valued at $3,500 and personal estate valued at $5,700
Neither
Benjamin nor his wife,
Sallie Sumner Willis
could read or write.
Notes from 1870 Census:
Benjamin Willis
owned real estate valued at $2,000 and personal
estate valued at $3,000
The 4 year old
Francis Willis living
in the household at the 1870 census is not the child of
Benjamin & Melissa with
ABSOLUTE certainty; if she is, she was obviously conceived prior to the
Dec 19, 1867 marriage.
Also living in the household
with Benjamin
and Melissa at
the 1870 census were Cynthia, George, Martha,
Sarah, Franny and
James from his marriage
with Sallie (Sarah) Sumner.
