While
stationed in the South Pacific in 1944, Lieutenant Henry Roy Willis would
voluntarily ferry planes from New Zealand to the Philippine Islands after
his regular combat patrols were complete. He made the first military flight
over the island of Formosa that had been made in thirty years. He
disappeared on a reconnaissance flight over Luzon in June, 1945. He was
declared missing in action on July 10, 1945.
